Dreamweaver 3 Features:
  • Building a contemporary Web site isn’t easy, and keeping one current can be a logistical nightmare. Macromedia Dreamweaver 3 offers new tools for managing sites, as well as other new features for streamlining the Web-site production process.
  • On the surface, Dreamweaver 3 is an easy-to-use Web-page editor and site design tool, supporting all basic page elements. However, it has enough depth to build sophisticated sites with features such as forms, Flash files, frames, cascading style sheets, and ActiveX and Java controls, just to name a few. It offers WYSIWYG editing as well as access to HTML source code.
  • In version 3.0, editing HTML files has been improved with added support for styles, and an HTML source code inspector, which can be docked (like a Window palette). HTML code can be block-edited in this window as well, by selecting entire lines and dragging them to a new destination.
  • URLs in imported Flash movie files can now be edited in Dreamweaver 3.0, making it easier for a site administrator to change links in Flash files. Synchronizing local and remote site files works in both directions, ensuring that the latest version of a file is saved on both local hard drives and remote servers.
  • A history palette has been added as well, and all file editing is recorded and listed. Actions can be undone (like multiple undo) and saved as an action for reuse on other files.
  • There are more changes and additions that let Dreamweaver work more closely with other Macromedia tools (Flash and Fire works) and additional HTML-generation tools. Improved handling of imported elements. Group-project manageability has been improved via the check-in/check-out file system, and most of Dreamweaver’s menus and shortcuts are customizable, making for a better user experience.

  • Freehand’s premier vector illustration program, Freehand 9.0, sports several new tools to help you draw more precisely and create animated Web graphics.
  • Freehand is a program that still packs the basic drawing tools, including geometric shape, line, curve, and spiral tools. In addition, though, Freehand 9.0 Freeform tool, for example, pushes and pulls objects into any shape you desire, and a nimble Envelope function lets you warp and distort objects. Version 9.0 also offers some new goodies that let you add unusual touches to your illustrations. The graphics hose, for instance, lets you spray objects onto the page, and the Fractalizer makes the outline of your objects jagged.
  • Freehand 9.0’s new, customizable Perspective Grid makes it easy to alter the proportions of your two-dimensional drawings so that they look like you drew them on different planes. This tool is particularly handy for commercial artists who want to, say, create text that seems to recede back into the distance rather than lie flat on a page. For example, to make your drawing look like it’s tilted backwards at a 45-degree angle, simply slant the grid 45 degrees, place your flat artwork onto the grid, and the program warps the art to achieve the effect.
  • Freehand makes it a breeze to import and export files. The powerful PDF import/export filters let you open, create, and edit multipage Acrobat files, which has become a popular standard file format among professional printers. Also, Web graphics creators will like Freehand’s improved GIF export filter, which automatically adjusts an object’s color to the closest Web-safe equivalent, so that it looks its best on the Web. If Freehand can’t find an appropriate Web-safe color, it sticks with the object’s original color. Unfortunately, though, when the application does change an object’s colors, it doesn’t indicate which ones it has changed, making it hard to know which colors you’ll need to change manually.
  • Freehand 9.0’s new Flash support lets you turn your illustrations into animation files. Simply create a drawing for each frame of the animation—for example a series of images that get larger and larger—and Freehand will convert them into a Flash animation.
  • Great Graphics: Freehand is wonderful for its slick Perspective Grid and Web savvy. When it comes time to create dynamite print and Web graphics—Freehand 9 is the champion.
